Thalassemia in Ninavah – Iraq
According to the Ninavah Thalassemia centre's statistic informations, we have about 1000
thalassemia patients most of them are from Mosul city the capital of ninavah and the other are
belongs to the small cities and villages around Mosul like ( Talafar , Sangar, Qayara , Badosh,
hamam ali , ets….),
The rate of the thalssemia infection is (80-100) patients per year and they will be increasing year
after year because the blindness and hot war, we were know that we are needing to a miraculous
to change our bad condition, and we believed that we must work hard and fast with all friends in
the world to change and to keep the hope of life to those patients , parents and all our people in
Ninavah society.
We started establishing Ninava Thalassemia Society which is the first recent humanity and
charity thalassemia society in Ninavah, It was established (7\6\2003) after the last war on Iraq.
However our thalassemia patients suffered severely from lack of drugs, health care and other
medical supplementations including blood sacks and vaccines, and many patients died.
Therefore we have decided to establish a society to provide the required treatment and
equipments for patients .
They contacted other societies and international treatment centers in order to support the patients
by coordinating with other societies and health offices to achieve this goal .
It is lays at in Ibn_Atheer Hospital –- Mosul.
NTS is one of the NGO’s in IRAQ , and registered in NGO assistance office- general secretariat of
the cabinet - Iraq under No. (1L40910) .
NTS is a member in Thalassemia International Federation TIF .

The main requires to the health care & NTS GOALS
1- Providing medical equipments and necessary treatment to keep the patients alive .
2- providing the safe place for blood transfusion to reduce the chances of infection with serious
and infectious disease.
3-Taking care of patients who have already infected by hepatitis C which is caused by insufficient
care, place and knowledge to prevent the healthy patients to get the infection .
4- Providing relaxation ways for patients and their companions inside the center during the
treatment period .
5- Improving thalassemia centre staff besides the countries support and encouragement .
6- Improving the ways of medical treatment experience to enlighten people of this disease and the
ways of prevention because its hereditary disease .
7- Preparing the thalassemia patients psychologically ,socially and medically to live naturally in
the society and support the spirit of hope in future .
8- Providing all communication ways with international thalassemia societies and scientific blood
research centers for coordinating together and get the joint experience .
9- Supporting research centers at universities ,medicine collages and hospitals to work in the field
of blood diseases research specially thalassemia disease to get the alternative treatment.
10- Urging all countries and charitable authorities inside and outside the country to bear the
responsibility of sending programmed and regular patients to specialized centers for making
BMT for it is the only way of the final recovery .
11- Urging charitable authorities such as countries ,bodies ,factories and ,political, social
personalities to grants sums to this society in order to continue the work of this society and its
activities to get rid of this hereditary ,odious disease .
12- promoting the Iraqi government and the health minister to sign a BMT protocol with Italy in
order to get the Italian technique of BMT with treatment centers in Iraq.

NTS ACTIVITIES :
NTS Activities concentrated on health care & Society,
The health care is including NTS concerns with all parts which deal with thalassemic patients .
Thalassemia center, blood bank ,and patients themselves.
The most important NTS activities are :
􀂾 Building a new treatment thalassemia center in Ibn Al-Atheer Hospital - Mosul, by coordinating
with (Peace Wind Organization in Japan).
􀂾 Supplying thalassemia centre with some medical materials when being unavailable in the
center’s lab such as Bovine albumin & Antihuman globuline,Serum ferrtine and kit of HCV
RNA etc..
􀂾 Preparing a data base for thalassemia patients and their families whom they are members in the
society and the center.
􀂾 Distributing pumping devices of Disferal drug on the patients directly and free.
􀂾 Repairing pumping devices of Disferal free of charge.
􀂾 Coordination has been made with charity associations to supply our blood center in Mosul with
separating blood components device for its necessity.
􀂾 Supply patients with medical requirements (10cc syringes,20 butterfly and 20 amp. of water) for
injection in order to cover the lack of these equipment and encourage the patients to take the
Disferal.
􀂾 Making contracts with many governmental and non – governmental forms to support the society
and its humanitarian programs by giving monthly allowances and one of these contracts is our
contract with the technical institute and the technical college and University of Mosul. And with
many of the people of Mosul, and we are continuing to enlarge the participation circle.
􀂾 In coordination with Television and Broadcasting Form in Mosul many programs have been
broadcasted in order to educate the people of Mosul by explaining thalssemia disease and how to
protect from it beside encouraging the people to submit the physical and real support for
patients and the society.
􀂾 In coordinating with religion scholars and many of governmental forms heads, about 500
hundred volunteers have been persuaded by offering blood friendship lists from the mosques
and the governmental forms declaring their desire to donate with blood for all their life and
these lists contain the address, telephone number and blood sample, from this point we
guaranteed volunteers ready to give their blood lovely.
􀂾 NTS has collected and sent 190 blood samples from 30 cases of Thalassemia patients to blood
diseases institute IME Foundation- Italy in order to perform the tests of HAL typing to make the
BMT operations at specialized treatment centers .
􀂾 Coordinating with IME Foundation, NTS was ending the suffering of some thalassemia Patients
by BMT operations to some cases between 2005-2008.

NTS future plans will be :
- Building an advanced Blood Diseases Centre in the city.
- Legislating a new law to make the pre marriage test to reduce the new cases of thalassemia .
- Building a BMT centre of thalassemia and leukemia treatment .
- Providing the test of placenta to detect the thalassemia infection from the first weeks of
pregnancy .
- NTS is hopping to show in our near future the rate of the thalssemia infection will be decreasing
to zero.
